Bio

Limia’s professional tenure in spatial design, design strategy and years spent as a design educator has led her to work with numerous clients, sponsors and interdisciplinary student teams. She has led and mentored teams in both industry and academia to develop projects that operate at variety of scales and complexity.

She began at IlT teaching graduate courses at the Institute of Design and currently leads classes and teaching faculty within IIT’s undergraduate Inter-Professional Projects Program (IPRO). Limia has created and led project-based courses that have run for several semesters, bringing contemporary issues to the students such as urban livability, sustainability, and manufacturing in America. She places special emphasis on the human experience and the need to retool our lives for future contexts. By empowering her students with tools that foster critical thinking and drive meaningful syntheses, she engages them with the deep belief that the skills they gain will transcend their discipline and their time at IIT.

Prior to arriving at IIT, Limia was a Design Director and Senior Associate at Gensler, where her design work spanned several project types including workspaces for global brands, retail, and architectural products. Her design work has won awards in both spatial and product design.

What I love about IPRO

I get to take a journey with interdisciplinary teams on their projects—a journey of discovery about themselves and the problems they are addressing. Because they have different sets of training and backgrounds, I see, hear and learn things that would likely not have occurred in a homogeneous environment. My reward is observing their growth throughout the semester, their joy as they see what they are capable of, and their awareness that the skills they have gained will carry on in their lives during and after their time at IIT.

I also highly value working with colleagues from disciplines other than my own and getting to know them as people. Learning about the world through my colleagues’ perspectives, expertise, and their passionate dedication to the students has repeatedly re-informed how I approach teaching and decision-making.
