Diversity is the key to creativity. If you are looking to generate more creative ideas, the most powerful but often overlooked strategy is to diversify your team. This IPRO project aims to celebrate values around diversity and inclusion, to be further embedded in IIT’s culture of innovation.

In this IPRO project, we will apply design thinking methods to bridge the gap among diverse student groups. Interdisciplinary groups within the IPRO team will choose a target group that is different from their own group in one or more specific and significant ways, such as gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or differences rooted in circumstances, for example, disability, knowledge and experience. The IPRO groups will conduct interviews and observations to build understanding and develop strategies to highlight the strengths of the target group. These strategies could represent objects, platforms, structures and socio-technical systems that are designed to be capable of better representing the target group across campus.

This course provides team members an introduction to design thinking as applied to community journalism, as well as hands-on opportunities to apply these principles in real-time.

Team members in this course will:

  • Develop a basic understanding of the fundamentals of community journalism
  • Learn how to apply design thinking methods to understand and listen to communities and empathize with their challenges
  • Engage in productive collaboration with teammates from multiple disciplines

The overarching theme of this IPRO project is diversity. It challenges and inspires team members to seek out, interact with, understand, and serve people different from themselves. Each team member will have the experience of venturing beyond her/is zones of familiarity to learn from diverse communities in real life and understand how differences can be leveraged to achieve breakthrough thinking and enrich everyone’s experience and outcomes.
