Seven students and two professors from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) visited the Puerto Rican Cultural Center January 25, 2012, to meet with José López, Executive Director, and Alejandro Luis Molina, Secretary of the Board of Directors, to discuss a team project with them. The students are all part of a special hands-on IIT class called IPRO (Inter Professional) 497-312: Designing a Document Management Process for Non-Profit Organizations. The goal of the IPRO is to create a low cost (in terms of money, time, and commitment) process for preserving and accessing documents relating to the history and functioning of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center.

The students, who hail from India, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Pennsylvania, and Illinois first toured the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture (IPRAC) and enjoyed a Puerto Rican lunch. They then examined the bins of materials that they plan to categorize, digitize, and make accessible to the public. The IPRO’s next step will be to sort the materials and determine how to turn documents stored in bins into material that is available to the interested public online.
